Capture nature’s beauty in rich blue tones using sunlight, simple materials, and creativity. Cyanotype printing is fun!

This guide covers everything you need to start cyanotype printing, from materials to step-by-step instructions and tips.

What Is Cyanotype Printing?

Cyanotype printing is a photographic process invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel and first used and made famous by botanist Anna Atkins from Kent, UK. It creates striking blue images.

This eco-friendly process combines photosensitive chemicals, sunlight, and objects to create beautiful impressions on fabric or paper.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Here’s what you’ll need for cyanotype printing:

  • Two-part cyanotype chemicals (we provide pre-made paper in our kits so no need for the chemically bit!)
  • Heavyweight paper or cotton fabric
  • Natural items like leaves or printed transparencies
  • Brush or sponge to coat surfaces
  • Shallow tray for rinsing
  • Glass or plastic sheet to hold objects
  • Flat surface for drying
  • Sunlight or a UV lamp

Our kits include these supplies, making it easy for beginners. SHOP NOW.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cyanotype Printing

1. Prepare Your Materials

Mix the chemicals as instructed, then coat your paper or fabric in dim light. Let it dry in darkness. You can skip this step if using our paper! SHOP NOW

2. Arrange Your Design

Place objects or transparencies on the coated material. Use glass or plastic to hold everything in place.

3. Expose to Sunlight

Expose the arrangement to sunlight or UV light for 10-15 minutes in Summer sun (longer in winter). Watch for a grey-green colour change.

4. Rinse and Reveal

Remove objects and rinse the material in fresh water. The vibrant blue tones will begin to emerge.

5. Dry and Admire

Lay your print flat or hang it to dry. Your cyanotype masterpiece is now ready to display.

Top Tips for Cyanotype Success

  • Experiment with different objects and layouts for unique effects.
